Dexter was graduated from Harvard in 1781 and admitted to the Worcester bar in 1784. He served as a member of the Massachusetts legislature from 1788-1790 and as a U.S. Congressman from 1793-1795. In 1799, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, but left in 1800 when he was appointed Secretary of War. From 1801-1802, Dexter served as Secretary of the Treasury.
